tough grease cleanup tips

I've had my 32" for a bit now, and I still can't figure out the best way to clean the grates. Soaking them hasn't worked out too well because I can't find a big enough container (the water heater pan is too small, and the XL mixing bowl is almost there).

I'm considering using a wire wheel on my drill, but thought I'd ask for advice first.

Also, do you have any go-to products for getting rid of the greasy, blackened stuff on the outside? I haven't found one I really like yet.
 
Skip the wire wheel, its too harsh. Just wrap the grates in vinegar-soaked towels overnight to loosen grime. For the outside, try something like Simple Green BBQ Cleaner or Goo Gone Grill & Grate theyre your options, they cut through the grease well.

if the spots are pretty tough i would recommend you try the Bar keeper's friend and don't forget to finish with some cooking oil to avoid rust on the grates.
 
i keep my old gas grill around for just this purpose. i place the nasty grate into the gas grill, on High, for 30-60 mins until all the crud is crusty and i can clean it with a grill brush.

if you don't have a gas grill, a few minutes with a propane torch should accomplish the same thing.
 
For greasy, blackened residue on the outside, many swear by simple degreasers like Easy-Off or oven cleaner, tho i suggest you make sure to test first and rinse thoroughly. If soaking isnt an option, scrubbing with a stiff brush and some hot, soapy water after applying degreaser usually helps too.
